Our Strange and Scary Night

So we were in bed last night, around 11PM. I was almost asleep, drifting in and out of weird little dreamlets, when I was jolted awake by somebody pounding the crap out of our front door. At first, I was thinking, "Who would come over so late?" Then I thought, "Why would our friends try to break down our door?" because that is what it sounded like. Then it slowly dawned on me that this was something bigger than a social call. The pounding continued, accompanied by the doorbell ringing over and over. Chad poked his head out the window and said, "Who’s out there?" And all we heard was, "I’ve been shot!"

So we rushed downstairs, keeping well away from the front door, because, hey, what if he had a gun too? I called 911 and they seemed to know something was already up from the questions she was asking, and within minutes, six police cars were flashing lights in front of our house. We peeked out the windows, and there was a half-naked man sitting in the street, surrounded by cops. They were searching around our neighbors’ houses with flashlights, and the K-9 unit showed up a bit later.  I realized I was totally shaking–I cannot convey how terrifying and disorienting those first moments were, when we realized that yes, someone was doing his best to break down our front door. We later discovered that there is a  fist-shaped dent in the screen.

But all’s well that ends well, and we’re fine. It was just a weird thing to happen in our quiet Medina neighborhood.

  1. Oh, dear! Is the man alright? You must come back after you have read the newspaper and tell me what happened!
How long did it take for your heart to stop beating out of control?

An ambulance came and took him away, but he was conscious and talking to the police, so I don’t think it was that serious. We’re definitely going to be checking out the police logs in the papers this week! I want to know what happened! I’m thinking it was probably some kind of domestic dispute. My heart was beating hard for a while, and it took about ten minutes to stop trembling.

so glad you guys are ok. who shot the guy? the cops? sounds like there were at least two people at one point. time to check the police logs when they come out.

I’m so glad you two are okay. I’d have been terrified, too. I’m so interested to know the rest of the story, if you ever find out.

UPDATE: Well, the Medina Gazette came over today and interviewed Chad about last night’s incident. Apparently, the man was shot in the abdomen over on S. Court St, which explains why the 911 dispatcher kept thinking that we lived on S. Court and not S.Broadway. But that’s all he found out from the reporter. So look in the Gazette. And cut it out so I can make a scrapbook page about it. 🙂

Wow. I second what the others have said. I’m glad you guys are okay. That’s going to make for an interesting scrapbook page. Love you, stay safe.
