Groundhog’s Day is Weird

But I kind of like it. Kim has a fun post about Groundhog’s Day up on her blog today. She mentions the movie, which I absolutely love. I’ve spent some empty moments planning what I would do if I had to live the same day over and over. I like the idea of a dress rehearsal, especially on days when I know I’ve screwed something up. The premise of the holiday is stupid, though, in my opinion. That dumb rodent has nothing to do with spring. Nothing. Except maybe that seeing its dead carcass on the side of the road heralds the end of hibernation and a beginning, maybe, for spring. If this makes me sound a like a hater, it’s because I am. I hate woodchucks. I think it’s hereditary. My father, normally a very nature-loving and respecting person, once found his purpose in killing the woodchucks that tried to decimate our gardens year after year. He had many cunning ways, which I won’t go into, but believe me when I say, the woodchucks stopped trying to live on our property after a short while. The word got out about HIM, the Destroyer of Woodchucks! Anyways, back to my topic, which is, no matter what that dumb rodent sees on February 2, in Northeastern Ohio, it WILL snow in April. Especially if the flowers are already blooming and I’m worried about the lovely, fat buds on the flowering trees and shrubs. Snow, snow, snow. This is from last year:

See? It snows in April.

This year, the Chuck predicted six more weeks of winter. Well, duh. It’s only the beginning of February. When does spring EVER come before mid-April here in the snow belt?

In other news, look at this cute photo I took this morning. They were having a Moment.

I love this picture of Chad.(and myles,) That soft look in his eyes and the disarming grin-it reminds me again of the love I feel for him. Thanks for this post, Ally.

  2. I totally forgot about Groundhog Day! I’m not a hater, like yourself, although I do agree it’s an idiotic holiday. Oh, and I LOVE that you referred to him as “the Chuck”! 🙂

Ok, want to hear a *weird* memory I have?? When we were kids we caught a groundhog in a trap one summer and wanted to keep it as a pet. We named it “Chuckie” which we thought was hilarious because you had an Uncle Chuckie. Then Uncle Chuckie came over to our house because your grandparents were gardening on our lot and we had to give “Chuckie” over to Uncle Chuckie. Sad, sad day for us. (I think Uncle Chuckie let him go!!!) Why do I remember these weird things?! I don’t like groundhogs either as my dad had the same purpose as yours … to destroy those creatures in a variety of creative ways! Ick!
