Yay for the Parade!

I walked up to the Memorial Day parade with my friend Jill and her son Danny this morning. Her daughter, Ally, and her husband, Rob, were marching in the kids’ soccer group, so we wanted to get a good spot to view the fun! It was really fun–I loved seeing the community spirit out there, and WHAT a glorious day! Luke & Hannah found us about half-way through the parade, so we watched it together. The best part? The dogs–a whole HERD of golden retrievers, all decked out in patriotic bandanas, marching en masse. If that don’t cheer you up, nothin will.

She’s gotta bump!

Just because it is sooo cute, and because she won’t update her blog:

Another long ride. . .

I would say that yesterday’s 73-mile ride required only 2/3 of the effort I expended last week. The route was much easier, flatter, and more beautiful, and all of that helped make it a good time. Of course, it rained within the first hour, so we rode around for the next 4 wet and soggy and chafing in our shorts. Fun times, that.

Avon_inverted_001_tweaked Here I am with Jillian, and boy do we look lovely!

Avon_inverted_006 I liked this sign, on the building next to the parking lot where we started.

Sasha, The World’s Cutest Puppy

Our friends, John & Karen, just got the cutest, smallest, softest, most squee-worthy Siberian husky puppy I’ve ever seen. They’ve brought her to two church functions, and the kids just go nuts over her. The adults do too, but they try to make it less obvious. This dog captures everyone’s attention!

I love portraits

Traditional: Emma at our house on Sunday afternoon, all pinked and spiffy, happy from a whoopie pie:

A Lifestyle portrait: Olivia, on our couch, reading a book (She just learned, and now she’s reading everything in sight!), pouting because her mom and I won’t give in and let her make the mess she wants to make:

A Self-Portrait: because I just put this mirror in my kitchen, and I’m totally in love with it there, and hey, that is something I take pictures of!

Down to the Wire

I only need $745 for my fundraising, but it is due on Wednesday! I have a contingency plan in case it doesn’t come in time, but if any of you have been planning to donate, today would be a really great time! Thanks to everyone who has supported me, with funds and prayers, encouragement and love. I love you all!

78 Miles is a Really Long Way

I can’t believe I made it through yesterday’s ride. It was long, very hilly, very windy, and my heart just wasn’t in it at the beginning. I had to drag myself out of bed at 6:00 AM, drive an hour and twenty minutes to the starting point, strap on my gloves and helmet, and ride for the rest of the day. At first, it was fine, and the first 40 miles or so were fun and relatively easy. Around mile 50, though, I started to lose it. Every hill looming ahead of me seemed like a personal affront. The wind was an evil entity all by itself. My face wanted to crumple up in tears–it was the weirdest sensation, like it hurt NOT to cry! So I tried to take my mind off my aching legs by thinking about why I’m doing this. And then I really started to cry, because I’m doing this because of my Mum, and that usually is a sure ticket for tears. Desperate to quit, I ran different scenarios through my head. "If I fall down, maybe everyone would feel sorry for me, and I could get SAGged back to my car!" or "I could just say that my wrist hurts too badly to continue" (and it did hurt, but not that badly.) But I knew that there are no wimps allowed, and I made myself hear my mother say, "Buck up, Ally!" and I prayed a lot. (Mostly stuff like, "Oh Lord, just please push me up this hill, just let me get up this hill.") Finally, around mile 62, something just clicked. All of a sudden, my legs didn’t hurt so much anymore. I wasn’t as tired. It started to get fun again! And  we found a good place to go to the bathroom (the lack of which probably contributed a lot to my malaise). I breezed through the next 16 miles at speeds I usually only get at the beginning of rides. I didn’t want to cry anymore. I need to remember, for next week, and all my other long rides, that I will turn that corner, even though it hurts like crazy to get there.  Thank you to all my friends that I KNOW were praying for me. It encouraged me so much to think of that while I was out there.

Yesterday’s Ride

I did a 30-mile recovery ride on the Towpath yesterday. It was great–I had to keep telling myself to slow down! I had some wildlife experiences, mostly with bossy Canadian geese, which if truth be told, scare me to death. I had to ride through several pairs, and they all hissed at me, and I had to just screw up my courage and go fast. I did see some of their fluffy babies, though, and they were squee-worthy. My dad would be so proud–I saw and identified a Balitmore oriole, red-wing blackbirds, goldfinches, blue herons, and a couple of indigo buntings! They were all flitting and flying about, mostly chasing each other out of their territories. It was not a Disney, sweet-little bird moment, where they are all la-la-laing around, but they were so beautiful! And then I saw these guys, bold as brass, just gazing at me balefully for a while:

And, I had a moment of true "I love Cleveland!" Which doesn’t happen all that often. But look at this nifty bridge they built for the path to cross a busy street!

It was so refreshing to ride and only deal with traffic of the furry-and-feathered variety. I think I’d take Canadian geese over mean semi-truck drivers ANY DAY!

Ever so Dedicated

To get this shot, I had to climb a tree and make monkey noises.  Ah. . .the things I have to do!

Dsc_0190_8x8

A little while after this, Angie, their mom, asked me if I worked out at all besides the biking. I said, "Isn’t biking enough?!" and she laughed. It must be; after all, I got up that tree!

4-Year-Old Humor

There is nothing funnier than a little kid who messes up a joke. I had a photo session with Danny and his family (Hi Jill!) the other night, and to loosen up the kids, I asked them to tell me some jokes. Danny thought about it for a while and finally said, "I got it, I got it!. . .Why did Tigger stick his head in the toilet?" And I knew where this was going, but I asked, "Where?"

"To find PEE!" he shouted.

And all of us just started howling! We decided that Pooh’s twin brother must be named Pee. It only makes sense.

Joyous Day

Today, we went down to my cousin, Elizabeth’s, church for her daughter’s baptism. Laurel is a beautiful young woman, strong and funny, sweet and loving. It was really one of the nicest baptism services I’ve ever attended. Afterwards, we went back to Elizabeth’s for a cookout. They had one of those chocolate fountain thingys, but they filled it with peanut butter. Let me tell you, a reese’s peanut butter cup dipped in a peanut butter fountain is a BEAUTIFUL thing.

After the party, Chad, Heidi, Frank and I went to Kingwood Garden Center, a wonderful place if you like gardening!

Why I do this

This came from a friend today–her dad is one of the people in whose honor I am riding. He has the same kind of leukemia my Mum had. Please pray for him and his whole family.

"For those who haven’t heard yet~

Dad went to the doctor’s today and the leukemia is back 83%.  It has grown
very rapidly in 3 weeks.  His blood counts were clear April 18th.  So right
now he is faced with the option of going back to the clinic for another
round of chemo with the "hope" that he makes it through.  If he does and
goes into remission for even a short time, they will do a bone morrow
transplant immediately.

With no treatment, the doctors give him 2 maybe 3 months to live.   He will
be headed to the clinic tomorrow morning.  He will be there at least 1
month.  Please pray for our family.

Thank you,
Amy"

This is what keeps me on that bike. . .
