Family Stamp Camp

We had a private little stamp camp this morning, with my aunts Heidi and Cynthia, my cousin Liz, and my Mom’s cousin Ruth. I know you are all tired of seeing this Christmas door hanger, but we had such fun making them!

Under the Weather

Sorry I haven’t updated in a while. I’ve been fighting a mean cold, and I’m losing. Coughing, runny nose, weak and humorously cracking voice. Tired and blah. Fun times. So that’s what I’ve been doing, in between Stampin Up workshops, nannying, and preparing for yet more Stampin Up functions. I think the cold is affecting my psyche, too. I’m crying over every Christmas carol and song I hear, and yes, I know I’m breaking the not-before-Thanksgiving rule. I’m sick, and I think I should get a free pass. It might just be more of that cracking open I was talking about in an earlier post (and no jokes about me cracking!) This time of year, the weather, the holidays, the paths my thoughts wander down–emotions are closer to the surface. I could have wrecked my car last night, listening and singing to the Hallelujah Chorus at almost full volume, crying away, driving through rain and darkness. It’s a wonder I stayed on the road at all.

Oh, and I need to remind myself:  Allyson, Thanksgiving is THIS Thursday. You might want to go to the grocery store and buy a turkey. Tomorrow. You have three days to get other stuff done.

In other FANTASTIC AND WONDERFUL NEWS!: Meredith is home from Iraq! Safe and sound in Hawaii, and she’s coming home for Christmas. We are all Elated.

Until tomorrow, faithful bleaders.

monday stuff

Rainy, rainy, balmy day here! I had a slow start–my sinuses have been bad lately when I wake up, and I usually don’t feel like doing the whole getting-ready-to-go-and-then-going thing until mid-morning. But I did finally get going, and the grocery store is where I goed. I totally rocked the grocery game today!

Total Value:  $255.87

Total Spent: $133.13

Total Saved: $122.74

Percentage saved: 48%

I got GOOD stuff too– 15 lbs of flour, 12 lbs of brown sugar, 24 cans of various kinds of broth, frozen veggies, cheese, free bleach, and much, much more. Wonder what I’m talking about? Check out www.thegrocerygame.com for more information. I’ve been grocery-gaming for nearly 2 years now, and saving 48% is a weekly thing around here.

LOOK what I got for a buck at Walgreens today:

My new favorite thing:

Img_6863

I am very picky when it comes to my chocolate and mint combination. It has to be the right kind of chocolate, the right ratio of chocolate to mint, the right intensity of mint–I’m a real pain. I don’t like Thin Mints, because they are too dry, and I don’t like most mint-chocolate chip ice cream because it is too green, or sweet, or I feel like I’m eating mint gum ice cream. You know what I mean. But these are the PERFECT chocolate and mint combination! Very smooth. Very dark chocolate. Very nice little package of yum.

It feels like Thanksgiving is sneaking up on us this year, because it is so early. I mean it is NEXT WEEK. As in, better go get those turkeys, gobble gobble. I can’t decide if I’m up for it or not.

“Thankful” garland information

Mantle_01

I have had several people ask me about the garland in this photo. I used the On Board Garland Greetings chipboard set from Stampin’ Up’s holiday mini catalog. It is $15.95, and includes the letters to spell "thankful", "joy", "noel," or an assortment of other words that you can make from the letters. (Page 9 of the mini: see www.stampinup.com and click on the link to the Holiday Mini catalog to view this page). I used double-sided patterned paper to cover the letters and backgrounds called "Apple Cider," also in the mini ($9.95 for 12 double sided sheets). I strung it together using 5/8" chocolate chip grosgrain ribbon after punching holes using the Crop-a-Dile. To embellish, I used gold brads, gold cord, chipboard accents from the kit, and glitter.

If you are interested in getting your own kit and paper, please contact me before November 30. That is the LAST day that mini catalog items are available. And, if you’d like to make this in time for Thanksgiving, please contact me immediately.

This was a fun project to make, and it’s something that I will carefully pack away and bring out each year in November. I am planning to make the Christmas garlands soon, probably a "JOY" and a "NOEL." I’ll post them when they’re done.

Cranberry Streusel Cake

I save all my holiday magazines from year to year, just like my Mum always did. They live together in two large magazine files from January through mid-October, when I take them out and litter every flat surface of the house with them. I go through them slowlyl, turning down pages that have ideas I want to try, and already this year, I have made a glittery, chipboard "Peace" garland to hang on my kitchen mirror. I also have some big plans for a pile of burlap I found in a bin in the basement. Another great thing about these magazines is the recipes! I’ve marked one for pumpkin mousse, served with whipped cream and dark chocolate shavings in a trifle bowl, and one for pecan-coconut pound cake. My mouth is already watering. . .

Last night, our flock group from church met at John & Jill’s for a "Thanksgiving" dinner, with ham, mashed potatoes, green bean casserole, a FANTASTIC roasted pineapple casserole that Linda P. brought, homemade rolls, and a broccoli casserole. SO yummy! I had already picked out what dessert I was going to try: Cranberry Streusel Cake. This is from Country Living HOlidays special edition 2004.

Cranberry Streusel Cake

1.5 cups flour

1/2 cup sugar

1.5 t baking powder

1/4 t salt

5 T cold butter, cut into small pieces

2 eggs

1/4 cup milk

1/2 t vanilla

1 12-once bag fresh cranberries

1.Preheat oven to 400. Butter bottom and sides of a 9 inch spring form pan. Line bottom of pan with parchment paper and butter.

2. Combine flour, sugar b.powder and salt. Cut in butter with pastry blender until batter is coarse and grainy (like you’re making scones).

3. Whisk together milk, eggs and vanilla and add to flour mixture. Mix lightly until just blended (again, like you’re making scones–don’t overmix!)

4. Spread batter into pan–it will be very thick and you’ll think you did something wrong. Don’t panic.

5. Sprinkle cranberries evenly over the top. (I found that a whole 12 ounce bag was too many berries. I used abou 3/4 of the bag, and every inch of surface was covered with lovely red gems. It turned out just fine that way.)

6. Make the topping:  Melt 4 T butter in small sauce pan. Add 1 C brown sugar, 1 t cinnamon and 1 t nutmeg. Mix till crumbly and sprinkle over top. I used a spatula to get it to cover the whole top.

7. Bake for 25 minutes. The berries will ooze lovely juice all over the cake, so don’t worry if it’s looking a bit wet.

8. Let cool in pan on wire rack for 10 minutes, then remove.

It was a total HIT! Had one teensy, tiny piece to bring home with me.

A Fun Reminder

Remember how Chad and I went to Tuba Christmas last year? This year it is on Sunday, December 16th at 4:00PM at E.J. Thomas Hall in Akron. You really don’t want to miss it, and this way, you can put it on your calendar now before it fills up. Check out this post to learn more:

http://allyanne.typepad.com/my_weblog/2006/12/what_joy_looks_.html

What else is there to do during the holidays? This year, I am planning to take a workshop at Quailcrest Farm. The Williamsburg Wreath workshop looks particularly tempting, but I might settle for the Boxwood Wreath workshop instead. (Someday, money will play no part in my decisions. I’ll just do the one I want to without feeling guilty because I could have chosen something cheaper!) My family and I will be enjoying brunch one Sunday at The Main Street Cafe on the square. And I will probably be making a trip out to The Pine Tree Barn out in Shreve for lunch and to drool over all the lovely, expensive furniture and decorations. Heidi and I are toying with the idea of going to The Ritz in Cleveland for High Tea one weekend, but we haven’t decided for sure yet. And of course, I will be doing all the requisite decorating, photographing, running around all starry-eyed at my decked out house, scrapbooking, gift-making, cookie-baking, and party hosting that I normally do each year. (You know, that sounds rather like my life ALL the time, not just at the holidays!)

What will you be doing this year? Share your tips in the comments.

Joy Door hanger/ wall-hanging

This is one of the projects we will be making at tomorrow’s stamp camp FOR WHICH I STILL HAVE SPOTS AVAILABLE IF YOU ARE INTERESTED! The photo is a bit blurry, because the hanger wouldn’t stop swaying gently back and forth and I lacked the patience necessary to wait for it to stop.

Cute, huh?

And now 145 people KNOW I’m vain!

Yeah, so Billy & Julie gave their blog address to the entire church. And guess whose blog is linked over there? MINE. And guess who had major huge traffic on her blog yesterday? ME. 145 hits! WOW!

Blogging is strange. I was talking to my good friend Jill M. last night, and I remarked how blogging creates an uneven relationship. So many of my blog readers know way more about me than I know about them. And it’s my fault, for posting my life in such a public way. I don’t really mind–I don’t have much to hide, and I like being known. But it does make for some vulnerability on my part. Fellow bloggers, how do you feel about this phenomenon? Blog readers (or bleaders, hee hee), what do you think? I think it’s an interesting question.

Oh, and I love the traffic. Keep coming! Keep visiting! But I do appreciate a comment, just to say hi, you were here. Feed the blogger!

Oh, and I feel sheepish, but I have finally updated Scrap In Your Pants. Go check it out!

Holiday Sparkle

I know. I haven’t been so great at updating this blog! But I promise to be better in the days and weeks to come! Here is something pretty for you: a Christmas gift tag or ornament.

Star_ornamenttag_02

All materials are Stampin’ Up (of course!). I used the On Board Accents chipboard for the tag and the big star. I covered the tag with a piece of "Dashing" double sided designer paper and sponged the edges with Real Red ink. I covered the star with heat & stick powder, then applied Romantic Red glitter (isn’t it sparkly!!). For the embellishment, I stamped the "Merry Christmas" image from the hostess set, "Party Punches" in both real red and old olive. I used our circle punches to punch out the center and the small star center and adhered it all to the same piece. Then I matted it on a piece of Old Olive cardstock that I punched out with our Designer label punch. I used a rhinestone brad from the Pretties kit in the center. Finally, I put an eyelet through the hole and threaded it with a piece of red gingham ribbon. Voila! A lovely something to hang on my tree!

Using our chipboard is a wonderful way to make ornaments and gifts for the holidays. Stay tuned for more ways to use chipboard in the next few days. I’ll also be posting projects from my Holiday Stamp Camp on saturday. I still have THREE spots open, if anyone is interested in coming! Drop me an email with any questions.

I’m So Vain

I probably think this blog is about me. . .

Haircut day! Yay! Haven’t had a haircut day since MARCH. I love it–new lady at the salon did it for me, and it didn’t cost as much as I feared.

Haircut

Haircut_2

I thought about going short–really short. But then I remembered how silly I look in hats when it’s really short. So I didn’t go really short. Maybe that makes me a weenie? I don’t care. I like it!

As promised. . . photos of The Boy

It’s like holding a warm, soft, adorable little bag of flour, because that’s about how much he weighs.

I apologise for the quality of the photos. It was dark, he was sleepy and squirmy, and this was the best I could do without flashing the camera at him.

And Baby Billy arrives. . .right on time!

Julie had Little Billy this morning at 4:20 AM. They are both doing well, for which we praise God! She had to have a C-section, which was unexpected, but his cord was too short to come down the birth canal. We will hopefully be able to see him soon, so I’ll post photos as soon as I have them.

Congratulations Julie & Billy! We’re so happy for you guys!

And, looking out my window, are those SNOWFLAKES I see?  HEE HEE!!! WOOHOO!!
