Page Planning: My First Step

I know, some of you are thinking, "Well, duh!" You have always planned your pages before ordering/printing pictures. You are so smart! It only took me 7 years of scrapbooking to figure this out! I used to just print everything. And I take a lot of photos. I would take 50+ pictures at one little event (like going to the fair, or digging the garden. Not kidding.) and print them all. So after struggling to fit as many as possible onto one layout, the rest would be snuggled into photo boxes, of which I have many. I am slowly being overrun by photo boxes. When I returned from New Zealand and realized that I had thousands of photos, I knew I had to change the way I do things. If I printed all of those pictures, not only would I have no room in my craft lair, but I would also have no money left in my bank account. Something was going to have to give.

My answer? Sketching. (This is actually tip #2.) I decided on my page topic, looked at the photos from that topic, narrowed down my choices, and then picked the number of photos I needed to print. Instead of printing 35 photos from Christchurch, I printed 12.

_DSC3790

This is a shot from my sketchbook. I draw the layout, include the photo sizes, and indicate where the title and journaling will go. Do I always follow the sketch exactly? No, but it helps me with my photo choices and sizes.

This leads to tip #3: Resize and crop your photos in a photo-editing software (like Photoshop) before you print.

I have always had a big problem cropping my paper photos. As my photography has improved through the years, I just don't have a lot of croppable space on my pictures. I tend to fill the frame with my subject and choose the backgrounds carefully, knowing I will be scrapping these pictures.  Without significant cropping, however, it's very difficult to get a lot of pictures on the page. So I solve this by cropping and resizing on the computer.

If you have a sketch of your planned page, you easily know what sizes you need. In the above photo, you see the sketch in the bottom right corner. It calls for a vertical 5×7 and three horizontal 4x3s. I will crop my photos to 4×3, or I'll just resize the whole photo as it is, then I will put two 4x3s on the same 4×6 canvas. Two for the price of one! You can fit 6 2×2 squares on a 4×6. I love that. I've saved so much money by being discriminating with my printing that I can afford to have focal point photos enlarged. And then, when the photos arrive from whatever printing service I've used (I tend to use www.snapfish.com sometimes, but mostly I use www.scrapbookpictures.com ), I know exactly how I'm going to use them. Scrapbooking has become a much faster hobby for me, and I can spend more time playing with paper, embellishments, and journaling, because I already know what my layout will be and what pictures I'm using.

First Three Tips:

1. Plan the page before you print the photos

2. Use sketches to plan

3. Crop and resize on the computer before you print

New Blog Series and other stuff

WOW, it's been a long time! I've made some changes in my life recently, and some of those are paper-craft related. The biggest change? Scaling back my Stampin' Up business. I've decided to "go hobby," and while I'm going to try to keep my demonstratorship active, I've stopped doing workshops and classes. It feels so good, and I know I've made the right choice! After 6+ years, I need a break!

This has given me more time for other things, especially scrapbooking for my own pleasure again. I started scrapbooking 8 years ago, during the summer of 2001. Since then, I've filled over 25 albums. If the trend continues, I will soon need a separate house just for my albums! With this in mind, I've begun to change the way I look at scrapping, photography, remembering, and "keeping up." I'm planning a series of blog posts here with my Top Ten Scrapbooking Ideas. I know lots of magazines do this, but these really are things that I'VE done in my personal scrapbooking that have improved my efficiency, enjoyment, and frugality (i.e., saving money–who doesn't want to do that!) in this hobby.

Stay tuned for new posts coming soon!

Tip #1 (this has made my life so much easier, my room so much neater, and my bank account so much fuller)

Plan pages before ordering prints.

Details to follow.

Scones: My favoritest things

Friday morning, for some mysterious reason, I found myself with time on my hands! I thought about what I could do with myself, and I decided that baking something would probably be the best use of that time. So I made SCONES, which, I've been told by real-life English people, are more like "rock biscuits," whatever the heck those are, than real "English" scones. Whatever. I like these.

2 C flour (today I went halvesies with white and whole wheat flour)

2 T sugar

1 T baking powder

1/2 t salt

Mix that all together, then cut in 6 T cold butter. Use a pastry blender if you have one.

Add 1/2 C mix-ins, like chocolate chips, dried fruit, etc. Today I used dates and toasted pecans.

Make a well, and pour in 3/4 C sour milk or buttermilke (you can make sour milk by adding some lemon juice to regular milk).

Mix very sparingly, with a very light hand. Turn it out onto counter and form it into a circle, like so:

Then cut it into 8 wedges:

And bake them for oh, about 15–20 minutes at 425 F. They will look and smell done.

These are best enjoyed with tea, on the front porch, with some accompaniments.

And if you are so fortunate as to have some homemade strawberry freezer jam on hand, by all means, use it!

Project 365: How to choose just ONE?

I've been working on a scrapbooking project since the beginning of the year, called Project 365. Basically, you take a photo a day and scrap each week on its own page. By the end of the year, you have your entire year scrapped and journaled. At least, that is how it is supposed to work. I've only missed 8 days since the beginning of January, and the funny thing is, I kind of quit doing it in  March and April. And when I decided to look through my photos to see what I had, I realized that even without doing it on purpose, I had a photo for almost every day. Because I'm just a crazy camera-lady,I guess. The hardest part for me is choosing just ONE photo to represent the day. I take LOTS of pictures. Sometimes I cheat by placing two on the same 4×6 canvas. or Three. Or even Four. It's not like the scrapbooking police are going to come after me, or anything. These are some from yesterday, all of which I love. Only one can go in the book, though.

Contender #1: Beautiful Columbines. Yesterday, Chad came up from the backyard saying, "What are those flowers back there? It's like little pockets of pretty everywhere."

_DSC3709

Contender #2: Ben, my sweet boy, who was trying to get me to take a picture of a little green ball he was carrying around in my hat. I pretended to, but really, who would take a photo of a ball when she could take a picture of this cutie-pie?

Ben 01

Contender #3: Emma. That hair! That crumbly face! This is what Emma ALWAYS looks like in the afternoons after nap. A wild-haired, toast-spotted flower fairy. Ignore the blur. She doesn't always hold still.

Emma 03

Contender #4: Chad eating ice cream and the pets wanting some too. He called me in last night. "You have to see this. It would make a great picture." I walked in to see him surrounded by little begging vultures. Our cats love ice cream. Is this weird? Myles knows he WOULD love ice cream, if only we would give him some. He has an iffy system, so we don't.

Pets want ice cream

So how do I choose? Which one typifies my day the most? Which one is most UNLIKE the other photos I've already chosen for the album? Probably number 4, because it has more "action" than my other shots of Chad or the pets. I have a lot of flower photos, I have a bazillion of Ben, and even more of Emma. But you see my difficulty here.

Here is a shot of a page from the album:

Oops. Let’s clarify.

Ok, I feel sheepish!

The person who made the remark that hurt me called me today. I mistook what she said, and heard something she didn't say. She actually said, "it's so different when you can take them home." Which is quite different from what I thought I heard. She was mortified that I thought she'd said the other thing.

So it's all good. I'm going to leave the post up though, because although it's not what I heard this time, I have had people say something like this to me in the past. Maybe my subconscious is just looking for reasons to get defensive. I am so not in control of any of this that I think I get a bit overprotective.

Thanks for all your kind comments, though. It's so important to be gentle with one another.

The Stupid Things People Say and What I Think About it

The other night I was sitting around talking with a group of women, and we were sharing what was going on in our lives. I talked about my struggle with infertility, the adoption process, the last fiasco with that whole thing, and how I'm coping with it. Then I said how thankful I am for the children I watch, that I have an outlet for my mother-love and that I have kids who love me. And someone piped up, "Oh, but it's so different when they're your own."

I was a little bit stunned, then I just glossed over it, but later, I was really hurt and annoyed that someone would point this out to me, like I don't know this, or something. I'm sure it's much, much better to have "your own" children love you. I'm sure it's very different. But don't go saying that to childless women who are struggling with the whole thing. At this point, I am going to take what I can get. And I think there is something to be said for having children love you when they don't have to. "Experts" say that kids almost always love their parents, even abusive or neglectful ones. But kids don't always love outsiders. My kids love me for me, and they don't remember a time when I wasn't in their lives. Their mother is my best friend (a cool perk to the whole situation). Their dad is my best guy friend that I'm not related to. I not only have kids, but I have a whole family.

No, it's not the same. My life is NOT going to be like other people's lives. Our family is not going to be like other families. We're going to be different, and that is ok.

More from Kingwood

It really was extremely lovely when we were there. My goal was to use up my entire memory card, which should have been fairly easy–1G card with camera set to RAW is only 178 pictures, but I only managed 110. Of those, I liked about 50. This is one of the easiest ways to get better shots–take MORE shots, study the ones you've already taken, then try something different. Anyways, I liked these too.

“check me out. No really, check me out!”

That is what this guy was saying to anyone who would listen today.

We saw this guy today at Kingwood, in Mansfield, where I had a picnic with the Aunties and Liz. It was a beautiful day, and the TULIPS were LOVELY.

And now for something COMPLETELY different!

I'm tired of the gloomy, sad posts. I'm moving on and cheering up.

This helps. It's my brand new car!

New car for blog

Hello, Spicy Red! Isn't she pert and pretty?

Oh, here is a little bit of sad. This is how I felt to be giving up my dear old Saturn.

I've always loved that car, but it was getting old and starting to fall apart.

Happy Birthday to Jordan! Today he is 23. We had lunch at Dan's Dogs. Do I look ten years old than him?

And I just like this picture:

Reflection

I really am ok. After the initial disappointment, I've been pretty steady. I wasn't really expecting it to happen, and I was resigned to it after hearing the caseworker's assessment the week before. There will be another child. It IS going to happen, someday. Thank you all for your kind words and love–it has helped tremendously.

Update: NO baby for us this time

It's hard to tell people over and over, so I'm just going to post here. When I have a better handle on my emotions, I'll be able to talk about it, but not yet. The birth mother went back to her home state of Kentucky last week and had the baby there. Our caseworkers don't know what she's going to do there, but it seems safe to assume that if she does plan an adoption, it will be in Kentucky's system and not ours. At least we know now. I admit I had some bad moments yesterday, trying to understand what the heck God is doing and why it seems so necessary to play with my heart like this.

There are small compensations along the way, the sort of things that have helped me through every heartache I've had in my life. Friends, books, tea, chocolate, spring, grey kitties, blooming lilacs, baby plants in my garden, birds singing, bees bumbling around. Playing and making and moving. Singing and drawing and cooking. If I focus on what I DO have, instead of what is missing, I realize how very, very rich I am. I am definitely rich in wonderful people to love and to love me.

Dress Up

I think that most of the time, I am all of six-years-old. When Linda, who just got a job at a costume store and needs to work on the catalog of the costumes, asked me if I'd like to model some for her, I said yes without a second thought. She took these, amidst many giggles and shrieks–it was so much fun to be on the other side of the camera for once! Of course, I couldn't leave well enough alone and played with photoshop. These are some of my favorites.
