Trying to Find Normal

These past few weeks have kicked my butt. I forget every year how hard the holidays are for me. It's amazing, but I really DO forget. Planning all through the fall, I think of the projects I'll do, the food I'll make, the wonderful memories we'll create, the experiences we'll have. Christmas music on all the time, candles lit and hearts full to overflowing. And then, mid-December, I remember that my mother is dead, my dad is far away, my family scattered all over the freaking world, and I get all stalled. I realize that I HATE the holidays, and why do we have to do this stupid thing ANYWAY? I put away the decorations practically wilting with relief. And this year, to make things even more complicated, we added a temporary child to the mix. And every time sometime magical happened with him, a little part of me whispered, "But where will he be next Christmas?" I cannot silence that voice, no matter how hard I try.

And now it's a new year. I'm still the petty, irritable, stubborn perfectionist I've always been. I find myself letting future "what-ifs" rob me of today's joys. I don't remember how to keep my plates spinning. I can't seem to find what my normal is anymore. Outside, the world is bright and cold with snow and with the promise of snow. My empty fireplace beckons to me. Six new books are waiting. I have hundreds of photos to edit, organize, and scrapbook. Unfortunately, I can't remember why I bother, but I want to remember.

Am I having a mid-life crisis?

Sorry to sound so uncheery, but it's all I got right now.

Ringing in the New Year. . .at the beach!

We made it to Chincoteague, to Meredith's new house for the new year! I was nervous about driving for 10 hours with a small boy, but he did really, really well. Aside from talking non-stop all the time he was awake, his behavior was great! It does help to have a fun box to play with.

When we arrived, Heidi, Kristen, and the kids were on the front porch, jumping up and down, waving, hollering their heads off in welcome. Little A was really confused–why were all his people here in this strange new place?  The kids had so much fun telling me about their Chincoteague. I loved it.

Friday, we made it out to the beach, where it was cold, but not TOO cold.

While the big kids looked for shells, the littlest kid kept pointing out at the waves and saying, "me!" So we kept a close eye on him, the fearless daredevil! Chad helped him get close without being in danger.

"And our friends are all on board! Many more of them live next door!"

Today, I took down Christmas and reorganized it and put it all away. HUGE sigh of relief! I wonder why? I am always so happy to put it all up.

Anyways, I hope you all had a very merry Christmas and enjoy the week between now and New Year's!

A little Christmas trip

Yesterday, Little A and I met up with the Clotworthys at the rapid station.

And we rode the train up to Tower City!

We were all mesmerized by the fountain:

And made wishes.

It was fun, because all we wanted to do was enjoy the ambiance. We didn't go into a single store.

We rode a little train and waved at our people:

And look! I was there too!

Then we stepped out into the frosty dark night to see the lights.

Another Random, Disorganized Blog Post

I am SO good at these!

I have suddenly fallen off the Christmas bandwagon. I'm not sure how it happened, but I am no longer "in the mood." I need a grace week in between now and next week, just to get myself back into whack. I think being sick for a long time has wreaked havok on my holiday spirit. I didn't want this to happen again this year–I wanted to feel it. Rats. Anyways, I'm still taking pictures though.

Someone with this awesome tractor he got at a Christmas party! It had full batteries on Sunday, and by yesterday, NOTHING. He has been playing with this 24/7. You could not imagine a better toy for this boy.

These photos crack me up!

I'm really rather scary when I do that. I need to maybe NOT do this.

Wanna See Something Pretty?

Also, this cracks me up:

Those two. Seriously. They are completely infatuated with each other.

Yesterday, I decided to stop trying to be busy and get things done all the time and have a cozy book day instead. I sat by the tree and read my book and supervised my boy, who was messing about with "big Trucks!" and it was lovely. Just what I needed!

Carol contemplations 3 & 4 here and here.

December Two = I don’t know what

Nothing really Christmasy going on around here, except that our Christmas present to ourselves arrived today. We are finally entering the world of the flat-screen TV, which is good, because our old behemoth set is on the fritz.

It’s Beginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas!

Today:

01December09

Good times decorating the tree, putting all the ornaments on the same branch and whining about wanting to put "More! more!" on the Advent calender.

I miss my carol contemplations. Here is a link to December 1 from last year:

Come Thou Long-Expected Jesus

In other news, my crazy cold has now invaded my left ear, giving me a crackling sensation when I swallow and putting a veil between me and the rest of the noisy world. I don't like it. For Chad's birthday, we ordered lots of fattening food from Dominick's and had a feast. I liked that. I simultaneously liked and disliked it, because the food was great but the swallowing was annoying. Unfortunately, swallowing is a key element of eating. This is a dumb post, I'm going now, bye.

Happy Birthday to my Honey!

Today is Chad's birthday, huzzah!

2009October079

We don't have any big plans–just ordering from our favorite local restaurant tonight, watching some movies, hanging out. I feel badly sometimes that we don't make a bigger deal of his birthday, but he really should have thought about how awkward a post-Thanksgiving pre-Christmas birthday would be BEFORE being born on December 1. He agrees it was a silly thing to do.

It is also my brother's birthday, but since HE NEVER READS MY BLOG, I am NOT saying happy birthday to him here!

Yeah, that'll show him!

Getting a Christmas Tree with a 2.5-year-old Boy

So we get to the Christmas tree farm we always go to, and it's all lit up pretty and sparkly. The trees are fresh and fragrant, and sky is that electric blue of dusk, and we've just had the excitement of riding in a different vehicle. And what does the boy flip out about? The tractors.

_DSC9564

_DSC9573

Watching the man park the big tractor.

_DSC9576

And THIS is *total* awesomenesss.

And then we bought the tree (after the fastest tree decision in history. I saw the tree in the first five minutes and said, "yep!"), and had to leave the tractors behind.

Cruel, cruel world.

_DSC9578

It was impossible not to laugh. I hope this doesn't make me a bad person.

Today, I spent much of my time winding lights all over our larger-than-expected tree. I ran out mid-way through and had to send Chad out for more. Here it is, all lit up and waiting for ornaments.

And so begins the season!

I love this picture.

Holiday Cuties

Heidi is going to beg me for copies of these, and I am going to tell her NO. Because she needs to wait until Christmas. I'm saying this now, here, before I start anything.

I did a photo shoot for Luke & Willow on Friday, after my crazy Black Friday experience. I was tired, bleary-eyed, half-baked, and I think I should always do photo shoots after sleepless nights, because I like what I get!

I don't think I posted anything they'd use for their Christmas card. If I did, I'm sorry to spoil the surprise! These are too cute to keep under wraps!

Black Friday = WOW

So, I've never done the Black Friday thing. Until this year, when Kristen and I decided it would be fun and hilarious and we should totally do it. So we did. After a bad night of not being able to sleep (some strange combo of Thanksgiving food and drink?), I got up at 3:30 to wait for Kristen, who came all bubbly and cute to pick me up. I looked like death and she looked like one of Santa's adorably perky elves. Anyways, we hit Kohl's first, because I had some trucks to purchase. These trucks:

IMG_1676

THREE of them to schlepp all the way around the store, because that's where the line was. It moved quickly though, and we shopped along the way.

IMG_1677

Seriously, nobody should look that cute at 4:30 AM.

Then we went to Target. HA! THAT was crazy! We filled up a cart (as soon as we could fine one!) and by the time we were ready to get in line, it stretched completely around the perimeter of the store. We looked at each other, said, NOPE!, and ditched the cart in favor of Bob Evans. Good call!

IMG_1680

Will we ever do Black Friday again? Ask us next November. Right now, I'm feeling a little burned out. I love shopping online, can I just say that?
