The weather may be dreary, but the plants are loving the wet coolness. We removed the sod from the narrow strip between the walk and the driveway, because that is where we get the most sun. It was just wasted on grass. I’ve planted three kinds of nasturtiums, basil, parsely, and another lavender plant here, hoping to reap a lovely harvest in a month or so. Salads. . .Pestos!. . .wonderful. Right now, it looks kind of sad and droopy. I have high hopes, however.
Remember the sprouts? They’ve grown too.
Spinach:
I’ve planted more lettuce in peat pots, hoping for the day that my new side bed has been built up high enough to actually plant things in it. Here are some Swiss chard and lettuce containters. The second photo has the peat pots in the background, all lined up like good little pots along the side of the driveway.
I know the porch looks like a chisel-monster has attacked it. We hope to remedy this sometime this summer!
I also hope that we build some planters to put along the side of the porch this weekend. I’ve been reading Square Foot Gardening by Mel Bartholomew, and it has some ideas for container gardening. I want two planters with frames for tomatoes, cucumbers, and beans. It’s an experiment–last year, the tomatoes just didn’t get enough sun on the other side of the house, and I think they need to be on the driveway to get enough. We shall see.

Oh how I love to see your green little babies! And at the risk of sounding a little Sweeney Todd and a little Dundee-Looks like some good eating!
So nice! I especially appreciate your motivation (since mine has been lost? misplaced? used up?). That strip is going to be fabulous! Good move getting rid of the grass.
As pretty as your plants are, my eye was totally drawn to your beautiful brick road in that first picture. I am so jealous of your pretty road!
Even though I haven’t gardened in a long tim, I have read “Square Foot Gardening” and it was wonderful.
Ally,
Buy some Osteo Biflex. Get the extra strength glucosamine with chondriton.
It takes about 2 weeks to work. That should
get rid of the arthritis pain. That is from personal experience with me, John and Paul.
Love ya
