Fun Yums from Japan

Meredith had to go to Japan on Navy business last week, and today, I received a package stuffed with goodies! The only thing I really requested was Pockys, a strange Japanese confection of cookie/pretzel like sticks dipped in something, usually chocolate. She sent LOTS of Pockys, plus plenty of other yums and not-so-yums.

See that box on the end, that says "Fran?" Well, those are Pockys, dipped in white chocolate and then something green. Really, really green. Our taste-test revealed a mint-like flavor, so we surmise that it is mint. And it’s gross. Very gross. At least, I thought it was gross.

Chad didn’t think it was so gross.

I adore Japanese packaging. They think of everything! My favorite, aside from the tea tin, which will be its own post sometime this week, was the picture of the happy girl on this package of chocolate covered peanuts.

The great fun is not knowing what is inside the package. You can try to figure it out from the pictures and the very few, random English words, but mostly, it’s a guessing game.

This is something I am very happy about: Instant milky tea. Now before you strip me of my tea-snob status, I must admit that I can only enjoy this beverage when I divorce it from my archetypal idea of tea. This is a sweet, milky, hot drink that you put in a tea cup and drink. It’s fabulous! It reminds me, very joyfully, of the canned hot tea you can get in Japanese vending machines. That was my favorite day in Japan, when we found the hot tea vending machine. I wish the Japanese would take over the American snacking industry.

Thank you, Meredith! I love it all, even the gross green Pockys!

So- the green pockys are gross? Thanks for the warning. I tried the asparagas biscuits smeared with mustard and heated in the microwave per the pictorial instructions—not bad, but I like them better plain. I didn’t notice the happy girl before but then again even the Japanese must have a little debby.

  2. I keep reading about Pocky, but have yet to find any to try. Must get to Asian market in Pittsburgh sometime soon!

Yeah, ummm, how come I didn’t know that you’d ever visited Japan?
    I’m just sayin’……………………..
And their packaging IS great! I love to go to world market, just to look at the packaging they have from all over!

I am glad that you enjoyed all the pocky.
